Ephraim is kind of dodgy about his past tense from the start . He also refuses to drink which greatly upsets Thomas . We end up finding out after that Ephraim watched a gaffer die at his previous job which make Thomas even less trusting .

This does indeed start to sound intimate after hearing Ephraim ’s tale . It becomes even more strange when it ’s let out that " Ephraim " is also named Thomas , he ’s just using the name of his sure-enough boss , drained after his neglect . It ’s not instantly posit , but it ’s very to a great extent hint that Ephraim could have saved him .
Who’s Death Did Ephraim Witness?
Ephraim , who is Thomas , who is maybe Thomas the lighthouse keeper in a unearthly time loop topology ? Let ’s tear this apart just a little bit and see what we can find . Since these are parallel stories , there are a few options . Perhaps Ephraim saw the death of his foreman , leave to become a lighthouse custodian , and then got maroon .
This check out so far . But what if the wickie that Thomas murdered was a hallucination that he ’s experiencing on repeat in some kind of purgatory as penalization for watch the death of his chief ? This sounds farfetched , but this whole pic is hallucinatory so it ’s no major stretch .
What Is The Siren?
There ’s a siren , both a real one and a hallucinatory one , that plague Ephraim ’s cognizance throughout the film . At first , it ’s manifested as a small wooden dolly that he regain in the bed that belonged assumedly to the premature wickie .
Once he finds this , he has an umm … sexual encounter with it , which is relevant to the history , because later on , in the throes of his mania , he see a siren out in the piddle , in which the same matter happens . This bump at about the same time that you realise he ’s completely lost it .
How Long Have They Been There?
" How long have we been on this rock ? Five weeks ? Two years ? assist me to recall . " This is a question that Thomas poses to Ephraim . It would n’t be a mistake to assume this is being posed to the watcher , however . The film is so disorientate that there ’s truly no flesh of reference point for metre .
You , as a viewer , are in the same gravy boat ( no pun intended ) as the wickies on the beacon light , impart the tone of the film an even more liminal aura . This is probably the only closed book in the film that legitimately ca n’t be divine .
What Did Ephraim See In The Light?
The brightness level . Constantly taunting Ephraim , and being hide away by Thomas . We ca n’t ever know for trusted what the light holds , but given Thomas ' sexual skirmish with the light paralleling Ephraims , we can presume that it has something to do with desire .
We can also assign it to some kind of esoteric significance . Is it God ? Enlightenment ? Insanity ? All of these interpretations make mother wit since when Ephraim finally looks at the igniter , he ’s overexposed in the frame and the euphony make the level of deformed dissonance . This suggests a lacrimation apart of his egotism as separate from Thomas , the island , his saneness , everything . He ’s unfeignedly mad , in the same way , his communion with the siren drove him insane .
What Does The Ending Mean?
In the end , we see that Ephraim kills the sure-enough and brittle Thomas . After burying him alive , which Thomas does n’t really fight , mostly since he ’s been ill mystify , Thomas live and looks at the ever - allure lamp atop the lighthouse .
When he ’s presumably pluck aside , drink down , or otherwise destroyed , we pan down to a body dwell on the beach below the beacon . It looks like Ephraim , but also with some of the features of Thomas , which lends credence to them being the same somebody . It is in truth unmanageable to estimate out , but that really is the beneficial bet .
Who’s Lying To Whom?
We always see Thomas rest to Ephraim , lying in his journal about his work ethic , and gaslighting him into decisions it seems like he normally would n’t make .
But we also have to take into invoice that Ephraim was systematically hesitating to explicate his history in regard to previous employment and motivation for escaping the manslaughter he commit .
When Does The Line Between Reality and Fantasy Blur?
This is where we really start to make a judgment call . Ephraim and Thomas are both extremely unreliable storyteller . Which one is less reliable though ? Ephraim does indeed descend into confutable soundness of nous before Thomas does , but Thomas also tell him that he chased him with an ax right after we see Thomas chasing Ephraim with an ax , now contradicting what the viewer encounter .
Although up until this point we can more or less reliance what we ’re find out as what one character is experiencing , it ’s here that we pull in the film itself might be intentionally misguide us . The film becomes a case , one less dependable than our 2 characters . At the end of the day , the film becomes a Rorschach test . You and your friends could come away with different interpretations and both be right .
