Young Justice

If Princess Amethyst looks like she has lost something on the cover of Amy Reeder’sAmethyst # 1 , then she has good grounds . Asthe preview forebode for this unexampled mini - series , when Amethyst returns to Gemworld , she find   that not only has her realm cryptically fly but its citizenry have as well . As always , something is afoot in Gemworld , but this time fans may not see Amethyst with many of the same allies they might know and be intimate .

Reeder is get Princess Amethyst into the solo public eye as part of DC Comics ' Wonder Comics   imprint   found by Brian Michael Bendis . Young Justice Poster

Reeder sets the picture for Amethyst ’s solo adventure on the eve of her sixteenth natal day with Princess Amethyst quick to return to her Gemworld household ( presumably following her departure with Young Justice after the events of " Seven Crises " ) . However , what Princess Amethyst does not know , and whatYoung Justicefans might have already guessed , is that her kingdom and her subject are not at all how she leave behind them . Reeder does a deft job of tying Amethyst ’s journey home into previous story while creating a smooth access point for new lector to link the Gemworld saga through Amethyst ’s well - warrant confusion . All is not well in Gemworld , and Amethyst is going to want more service than the " Crystal Healing " Holy Scripture her Earth parents gifted her can provide .

The overall consequence of   Reeder ’s art creates a feel akin to humankind like Oz and Wonderland . Much like those reality , Gemworld ’s whimsy mask an more and more sinister feel that mostly remain unseen … for now . However , lest there be any confusion , Reeder has firmly claimed this world as her own .   Reeder is at both pen and pencils in this miniskirt - series and resonance between her talent as a writer and an artist helps build the serial ' own particular spell . Despite the overall softness of the color palette , the line of Gemworld are just as precipitous and fractured as the cadaver of Amethyst ’s family . This neatly contemplate Amethyst ’s own fierce but   worry nature .   She may not be a schemer by any means , naively trusting that right is on her side , but neither is she a   wither   reddish blue . ( amethyst may be purplish in hue , but they are no less sharp for it ) .

Amethyst #1 2020 cover

The crown gem of this first issue though might be Amethyst ’s interaction with her fresh , somewhat reluctant ally . When she discovers that her realm has effectively disappeared , Amethyst immediately runs to her supporter Lady Turquoise , the ruler of one of Gemworld ’s more militaristic kingdoms . It quickly becomes clear that Amethyst ’s people are n’t the only thing that has vanished . Lady Turquoise seems to have fall back any warmth or friendly relationship she had towards Amethyst , leaving the princess without allies and without a clue . fortuitously , at least one Turquoise ’s citizens , Phoss , is willing to help her , even after Amethyst try on to destroy her " drive , " maybe because Phoss is sympathetic due to her girl also being from Earth . The banter between Phoss and Amethyst is so spot on it might be the most magical thing in Reeder ’s new series .

Without being heavy - handed , the serial also hint that it will be taking on not only the closed book of Amethyst ’s land but also Amethyst ’s privilege as a young princess . While Amethyst has had to fight her fair share of battles , the issue consider several moments to signal out some of the princess ’s own blind position . While Lady Turquoise is without a question acting oddly , she has a bonnie point when she tells Amethyst that she never reckons the monetary value to the Turquoise kingdom ’s   regular army when they fight back her battles . Phoss puts it a little more bluntly when she tells Amethyst that " What ’s good and bad in this human beings is n’t alwayscrystal clear . " Not only will Amethyst have tofindher realm , but she might also have to become really worthy of being its drawing card to recapture her throne .

This Gemworld princess ’s trials are only beginning , and the remainder of the issue promises one doozy of a surprisal for Amethyst . Reeder is changing some of the most cardinal foundations of Amethyst ’s human beings and send off this princess on a delicious pursuit to regain her home .
