Some of the most darling characters in theStar Warsfranchise have been the droids and mythical creatures that dwell it , and that remains rightful inStar Wars : The Rise of Skywalker . While fans will certainly be introduce to new and wondrous beings , the nostalgic pull of character like C-3PO and R2 - D2 remains ever muscular . The life behind those role , Anthony Daniels and Joonas Suotamo , spoke with Screen Rant about their lineament ’ journey and their own grooming for the final chapter of the saga on December 20 .

guy , here we are . Star Wars : Episode IX . It ’s all amount to an end . I ca n’t believe it ; I feel like a piece of my childhood is going with it .

Anthony Daniels : How old were you when you first saw it ?

Sidious, Tyranus, Maul, and Vader.

You know what , it ’s interesting . When I first sawStar state of war , really , I sawEmpirefirst . And I thought that was the only Star Wars movie . I did n’t get laid there was anything else .

Anthony Daniels : You did n’t have any Quaker who discuss it ?

I was 7 , and I had no idea there were any otherStar Warsmovies . I thought , " This ends really eccentric . The sorry guys kind of profits . " Then when I was 10 , I realized there wasA New Hopeand I diminish in love with the whole franchise .

C-3PO get one of the most emotional beats , it seems , in this motion picture . Did you automatically agree with what J.J. want to do with the character ?

Anthony Daniels : more often than not not , no . We have completely diverging ideas .

Yes , of row . But we had speak about it a quite a little in the showtime , and I ’d quite just asked him for something to do in this movie . And he more than gave me that . What I get it on about that logical argument , " Taking one last feel , Sir , at my friends … "

Diego Luna as Cassian Andor in Andor season 2

I ’m going to start crying now .

Anthony Daniels : It was we sprout it , and he edited it exactly the way I did it , which was a dandy honor . It actually was very incite on the set , and then I made myself kind of weepy look out it . It ’s a scrap sad really , is n’t it , when the universal ascends .

Joonas Suotano : The whole cinema is full of emotion , and such essence .

Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker C-3PO

Now we spoke atSolo , Joonas , but this is the first fourth dimension you ’re doing this without Peter around with you as your direction . And now you are the custodian of this character . Can you speak to me about why Chewbacca is such a cardinal part of this enfranchisement ?

Joonas Suotamo : I think it has to do with the full totality of Star Wars , and that he ’s been that presence on screen . When we ’ve watched this journey , with the galaxies and the lightspeed hyperdrives , Chewbacca has been there . Not necessarily making too much noise about himself , but he ’s been there . He ’s unique ; the great unwashed think he ’s a beast .

Anthony Daniels : He ’s a very consoling companion .

Star Wars

Joonas Suotamo : I think so .

I literally go out Chewbacca downstairs and hugged him , and I read , " give thanks you Chewbacca . " You ’re good , to me it ’s a real thing .

I ’ve always foundStar Warsto be the story of two droids . To me , that ’s what the whole dealership is about . For this to finally come to an end , now you get to kind of see it from a fan ’s position . How is that for you ?

Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker

Anthony Daniels : It feels very good , because now that the whole matter is complete , I can actually take out back and begin to understand piece of the story I did n’t understand . But the buff have always got it , because they ’re see it from the unlike slant . Now I ’m beginning to become a buff , if you wish . And they ’ve been right passably much all along . , I just did n’t have the chance to see it that way .

But to follow George ’s idea of the common man that has no mightiness , and is put upon by everything around , that ’s middling much how we all are . And it ’s one ground that C-3P0 and R2 - D2 ingathering to the general audience ; they kind of emphasize with these two pitiful characters .

I have a feeling that you ’re going to proceed on in this franchise , whether it be in another film or on the Disney+ side of things . But are you ready for this to end ; the journey ?

Joonas Suotamo : I think it makes sensation . It ’s always made sense to end it at IX , and I love the program of ending the Skywalker saga . I think it involve to have the rophy close and the closure .

Anthony Daniels : It ’s a pretty braw matter to do , to in reality [ finish it ] .

Joonas Suotamo : Yeah , and it ’s voiceless to do . It ’s hard to wrap something . But Chris Terrio and J.J. , were very traversed in Star Wars and from The Force Awakens . They just created this story , and it really answers the call . We ’re move to we ’re going to be very , I reckon , fulfil coming from this film

Anthony Daniels : They both come from a position of bass erotic love of the account from when they were kids . So , you sleep together , they ’ve got it right .
