Emma.
Over the years , there has been no deficit of Jane Austen adaptations , from stop pieces likePride & Prejudiceto modernised braid likeClueless . Director Autumn de Wilde mixes the two panache withEmma . , a film that hew closely to theoriginal schoolbook and spirit of the classic novelwhile bring a palpable cinematic energy and modern sensitivity that makes the history feel relevant to today ’s order , where appearances are more all - too - often valued more than the substance of a individual ’s character . The originalEmmastory is arguably the prototypical romantic comedy and is systematically laud as one of Austen ’s okay works .
Anya Taylor - Joy sensation as the eponymic Emma Woodhouse , the " handsome , clever , and full-bodied " wannabe matchmaker whose meddlesome misadventure and aloof nature keep her from discovering rightful substance in her own life . Mia Goth co - stars as Emma ’s wide - eyed serious friend , and Miranda Hart plays the long - suffering and mildly unsufferable Miss Bates . Josh O’Connor and Johnny Flynn play Mr. Elton and Mr. Knightley , respectively , while Bill Nighy steal every scenery with his portrayal of the delightfully oblivious Mr. Woodhouse .

So , how was making the movie ?
How was make believe the movie ? Hmm , I ’m actually going to think about it , because sometimes we get so used to saying the same thing .
That ’s always my anxiety , render to do up with something you have n’t been asked a thousand times just this week ! And that ’s what I came up with .
How was make this film ? This movie was a pleasure from starting line to last . Autumn de Wilde , our director , is the antithesis of Emma , in the sense that she ’s a really really good " Quaker marriage broker . " She brought in a whole bunch of people , and none of us really knew each other , aside from Mia and I , and we all just became a gang . Like , a existent family pack . And there ’s so much love in this photographic film . There ’s so much love for each other , and just going to work every sidereal day to work out with your best pals is just a dream . And then you expect around and you ’re take in these crazy beautiful English land and get to say beautiful dialogue , I ca n’t say more wonderful thing about it .
I got to chat with Autumn , and she was amazing . I do n’t know if it was her defect or my demerit , I ’ll have to check the tapes , but nearly every question and answer turn into a tan about a rock candy and roll band . She ’s a veridical rock scholar . Did you get to break up her brain or share note about different circle ?
utterly . And the thing about Autumn and I is that our workings kinship , in a nutshell , is that we take on each other . There was no such thing as out or keeping boundary . The amount of conversations that we ’ve had , both of us lying in her bed talking about Elliot Smith and then jumping into , " What do you mean Emma feels in this scene ? " And then , " Wait , did you see that guy walking across the street ? I really liked him . Maybe he could be one of the footmen . " Do you know what I mean ? We just have this girly house of cards that we sort of survive in . We ’re just friends who happen to get to make really cool art together .
Totally . And that shows in the movie . It ’s so true to … If not the schoolbook , at least the aesthesia of the era the schoolbook follow from . I ’m not certain how much of it is verbatim from the book , in reality …
Most of it , I think , if not all of it .
It has this energy that I opine a secular would n’t await from this type of period story .
A warmth . Yes . The fondness and the love . Autumn keep saying , " I need , when multitude see picture of this , I want them to wish they were here , " because we were having so much fun . And we were really having that much fun . matter would be delayed on set because someone would crack up a caper and the rest of us would end up sprawled out on the trading floor in our beautiful dresses , and then Autumn is screaming , " do n’t wrinkle the dresses ! " and render to cypher it all out . It was like summertime camp .
The costume in this picture find so different from your typical period spell . They ’re beautiful , but done in such a realistic means . You really get to see people getting dressed , and it ’s such an odd rite by today ’s standards , you really do n’t see that in the movies . There ’s no underwear !
You learn something every Clarence Shepard Day Jr. ! We wanted the hearing to get new information ! Yeah , the costumes were incredible . Our head word of department , Alexandra Byrne , she ’s everything I want to be when I arise up . I want to be a compounding of her and Autumn . They ’re the cool people ever . It definitely added something to each of the characters . Emma is vain , and each of those clothes were made on my torso , so whenever I check what turnout I was break that day , I was like , " Okay , so this is the coat that has a really great back , so I ’m going to deliver all my lines over my shoulder , so the photographic camera is look at the coat back and seeing that . " Because that ’s what Emma would do . I think we all had a lot of playfulness playing around in our costumes and seeing how they could assist tell the story advantageously .
Is every second you get to pass with Bill Nighy a giving ?
Yes . Yes is the resolution to that question . I am so lucky to count that man as one of the most important multitude in my life . I love him so dear . To get the combining of getting to work with him , but also getting to be such close Quaker , it ’s a wonderful addition to my life .
What was your first exposure to Jane Austen ?
I read Emma for the first prison term when I was eleven . Then I comply that with Pride & Prejudice . I could n’t read until I was eight years old , because I was transplanted from Argentina to England . I learn to mouth English through reading material . So I started read all of the Harry Potters , and that ’s where I develop my vocabulary , and then I move quickly to the other English greats . I wanted to acclimatize to the new place I was in . So I read Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens , and more Austen . I love show it again as an adult because it really reward the re - reading . The first time you learn Emma , you may skim over a bunch of stuff that really has a lot of important information . I re - read it before we started filming , but then I did n’t show it whilst we were ferment , because at that point , the script becomes your god .
Were you a big devotee ofClueless ?
I was a self-aggrandising Clueless fille , yes ! That ’s the one version I ’d seen , and possibly the only adjustment I ’ll ever see … It ’s too unusual at this current moment , for me , at this current peak in time . I had n’t watched the other films prior , and I wo n’t ascertain them now . It ’s too weird . But Clueless , I love that movie .
I definitely date thatCluelessDNA in your film , and not just because they ’re both base on the same story . It ’s like , despite being so point accurate , it find so hip and current … I ca n’t stress enough how much I liked your motion picture !
Oh , thank you ! I ’m so glad , truly .
It prompt me more ofCluelessthan , say , something like the movie ofPride & Prejudice , which I also really care , but it ’s just a whole unlike vibration . This does n’t feel … old - timey , I imagine is the phrase .
Our Emma is immature . She is young . It ’s first girl calf love , first real puppy love , first spirit of , wait , you ’re not actually that good of a someone , so I ’m not start to suppress on you any longer . First feeling of , oh dammit , I did a risky matter and now I have to apologize . I also eff how , every meter Emma apologizes , she apologizes with a bozo . Anytime she does something incorrect , she just show up at their house with a basket and a jackass and is , like , " here is my apology . " ( Laughs )
I also feel like this is a great entryway point for Austen for girls and boys . Autumn said she really want to articulate that , that she did n’t want Austen to be seen as only for miss .
We ’ve get some beautiful lady in this film , we ’ve got some hunky work force in this motion picture . It ’s funny , it ’s bright , it ’s weak , and it ’s got an crucial moral message to it . And it ’s romantic , but not in a way that gain you want to have up in the bathroom . It ’s genuine . I cogitate , all of my guy friends who have see it , loved it , and they ’ve all said , " Austen ’s not usually my thing , " but then they descend out and they say , " That was awesome ! "
Right , even if a guy does n’t really palpate that fashion , he ’ll say he does n’t wish Austen just to be cool .
" It ’s not really my thing , but … "
ripe ? " I do n’t really hump Austen , but that part in pageboy 82 … I stand for , I ’ve heard . "
" I ’ve get a line . purportedly ! "
Autumn suppose there was something about spue hot guys in every single purpose . She need everyone to be able to have a crush on someone in the moving-picture show . You ’ve got Johnny with his feathery fuzz and rugged scratch , and Josh is just super cute , and Bill is so snappy and self-respectful . I ca n’t get over how gorgeous Bill is .
He ’s awe-inspiring .
Did you palpate a sure joy at being surrounded by every type of live guy ? If that ’s not too silly of a dubiousness ?
I felt very lucky to be surrounded by citizenry who I was such a fan of . I ’d always had notion about certain multitude , and maybe when I was , like , nine or ten , I remember seeing Bill on telly and turning around to my mummy and move , " I think I ’m drop dead to be friend with that guy rope someday . " And when I was 14 and first heard Johnny ’s music , I hold open having this spirit . Like , " You ’re going to signify something to me in my lifespan at some point . " And they both have sex this . And so to be in a vista and looking at them , I was like , I kind of live this was going to bump . It was super eldritch to know it was going to happen , but I ’m thankful .
Awesome . I require to switch gears a bit . I believe you were , like , 12 or 13 when you shotNew Mutants .
( Laughs )
No , it was n’t that long ago , but it ’s funny re - watching that trailer . You ’re all kids ! But it ’s finally pop off to be get out next month . When you learned the new particular date , were you like , " It ’s about time ! " Or were you , by this point , wondering if the film was ever going to come out at all ?
I keep touch on to it as … It ’s like when you have an imaginary Quaker and you ’re trying to win over mass that it ’s existent , but nobody else can see it . I finger like my imaginary ally is now going to have its big coming out party . We did shoot it , it did happen … It ’s just taken a little while to get where it ’s supposed to be . So much has happened since then , but I ’m very pleased that it ’s coming out . I ’m very pleased .
From what I understand , they ’re not include any reshoots , right ?
From what I ’m mindful , there were no reshoots .
Okay , that ’s respectable to know . I imagine there was some bounce back and forth on whether those ever bechance or not . Thanks so much for your time in talking to me today !
