There ’s a young version of Azrael coming for the head ofBatman in theWhite Knightworld , but to get to him , this ' avenging angel ' has just kill one much - untouchable member of the Batman Family . Make no misapprehension : Azrael ’s decision to kill Jim Gordon may be the tipping point in his missionary station , since he ’s just made it personal with every copper in Gotham .
The moment in whichAzrael runs his flaming swordthrough the breast of Jim Gordon ( inCurse of the White Knight # 3 ) feels just aswrongas it should be . As Bullock , Montoya , Duke , and the readers all freeze out , stupefy at the sight of Jim Gordon ’s life presumably ended in an instant . Before Jim ’s cigarette can hit the paving he manages to get a pellet off at closemouthed range of mountains , releasing him from Azrael ’s leaf blade to lessen several stories into an alley below .
That ’s exactly whereCurse of the White Knight # 3left the story , on a full - page scatter of Jim crinkle on the paving material , bleeding out . While terrific and upsetting , the conclusion did leave things on a mercifully incertain note . Yes , a sword through the breast is a classic injury … butcomic account book characters have survived worse . But in the final stage Murphy was simply saving the dead on target pain for the next yield .
open on a flashback of Jim secernate a young Barbara to ache people who attempt to do the same to her , the grown Batgirl campaign to get to her male parent , being rush into emergency operation . She ’s there to see the efforts fail , and Jim Gordon die ( as makes the most sense , considering the damage bring down ) . But it ’s only as she flees in a scare that Bruce at last get in … realizing from Barbara ’s mood that the unthinkable has really happened . This new foe has come to kill , but it wasn’tBatmanhe took .
It ’s a heartbreaking scene , with the image of Batman cradling the body of Jim Gordon ( rendered to perfection by Murphy and Hollingsworth ) not likely to be forgotten by anyBatmanfan . And while it ’s Barbara Gordon who responds to the death of her father with murderous passion , there ’s no question Batman is going to make Azrael compensate for killing his oldest friend and friend . Not to mention the near cop in Gotham City .
