Captain America: Civil War

In the summer of 2016 , Marvel buff got to see a plot line realized on the big blind that they never expected to see : Civil War . Captain America : polite Wardidn’t stick to the comic ledger precisely , as the movie had far fewer characters than the amusing ( although this is justifiable , as the movie only had as many role as it could do justice ) . Nevertheless , it did a great job of transplant its canonical premise of superheroes being split up by newfangled legislation and fitting it neatly into the extensive construct of the MCU .

Each Avenger pick a side in the conflict that separate them , which lead in some of the closest members of the team standing on opposite face . Not all of them made the choice that was truly right for their characters , though .

Updated on May 4th , 2021 by Mark Birrell : Captain America : Civil War is much an Avengers moving picture , incorporating many of the MCUs biggest characters into its sprawling narration . The conflict and break that it produce replication throughout the superhero universe of discourse even now and the decisions made by the characters are still questioned by fans and even other characters within the franchise . We ’ve contribute another few entranceway to this list as so many of the pick that people throughout the movie showed off either the MCU ’s strengths with characterization or its weaknesses with logic .

Right side: Captain America

By the metre we catch up with Steve Rogers inCaptain America : Civil War , we know that he has a cause to be skeptical of a government body taking the Avengers ’ rein . InCaptain America : The Winter Soldier , he find out that S.H.I.E.L.D. – the only stable part of his life that stay on after“doing time as a Capsicle”–had been controlled by his mortal enemies , Hydra , the entire time .

He has every right hand to trust himself more than the government at this microscope stage . Plus , Steve is ( arguably ) the leader of the Avengers , so to efficaciously renounce his whole team must ’ve been a big ask .

Wrong side: Winter Soldier

While Bucky Barnes certainly feels bound to   Steve   Rogers and it seemingly makes sense that he would back whichever guidance Cap   prefer to go in , The Winter Soldier goes from not wanting to fight to joining up to push the world ’s governments , and half of the Avengers , quite quickly .

In the end , Bucky decide what ’s best for him is to be put on ice until it ’s good to take up that he ca n’t be used as a mortal weapon system against his will any longer . But he seems to completely overlook this at first to go after a man who has already successfully set off him against his will , tracking him to a place where that exact thing has happened to him before , seemingly multiple times . Zemo then use his presence to buck the Avengers apart . Overall , it would have been good if Bucky had just told Steve where to go and sit the whole matter out .

Right side: Ant-Man

The original Ant - Man , Hank Pym , is quite outspoken about his aversion for all things Stark - related and that opinion appear to have successfully fret off on the new Ant - Man , Scott Lang .

Couple this with Lang ’s meeting with Sam Wilson in 2015’sAnt - Manand it makes perfect sense that he would answer the call and take up the cause against Tony Stark . He ’s also show to be jolly rebellious by nature , so it ’s unlikely that the Accords would sit that well with him without any of those anterior association .

Wrong side: Black Widow

Natasha Romanoff sides with Tony Stark inCaptain America : Civil War , but she ( arguably ) should ’ve side with Steve Rogers . Granted , she does briefly aid his side of the argument at the end of the aerodrome battle , electrocutes Black Panther to allow Steve and Bucky to break away , but she still stands by Tony in the Sokovia Accords argument .

Natasha went through all the same trust issues with S.H.I.E.L.D. that Steve did inThe Winter Soldier . The Russo brothers tested Steve and Nat ’s friendship by having her side with Tony , and that work out well for drama , but it feel like she would ’ve gone with Steve .

Right side: War Machine

James Rhodes fall in Tony Stark ’s side inCaptain America : Civil War , and despite the fact he came out of the combat in intensive tending , the choice was a no - brainer for two reason . Personally , Rhodey has been Tony ’s best Quaker for yr . They ’ve always had each other ’s backs and he ’s always been kind of a sidekick to Tony , especiallysince he acquired his own suit of clothes of armor and became War Machine .

So of course Rhodey would choose Tony ’s side in the disputation . Ideologically , too , he believe in the government . He ’s served in the military and he respects General Ross . Rhodey believe wholeheartedly in the Accords .

Wrong side: Vision

Team Cap ultimately won the engagement over the Sokovia Accords . The coming of Thanos made the Accords pretty much moot anyway because everyone on Earth just wanted to be redeem and did n’t handle about any legal roadblocks . So , why did the Vision get together Team Iron Man ?

If he ’s an all - knowing A.I. who remember with logical system and reason and can compile enough data to predict the time to come , why could n’t he see that the Sokovia Accords were doomed to die ? The answer is likely so Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely could develop his romance with Scarlet Witch , but that does n’t seem like enough of an excuse .

Right side: Black Panther

Like Rhodey , T’Challa had two reasons to need to link Iron Man ’s side in the Sokovia Accords public debate , both a personal one and a political one . The personal rationality is that he had a vendetta against Bucky . Bucky was on the other side of the battle and T’Challa was determined to exact revenge on the Winter Soldier for supposedly perpetrating the bombing that killed his founder .

take Iron Man ’s side was the practiced manner for him to get to Bucky . The political reason is that T’Challa is a Wakandan royal . Several Wakandans were killed in the explosion that inspired the Accords , so he was one of the new legislation ’s most outspoken supporters .

Wrong side: Hawkeye

When asked why Hawkeye joined Captain America ’s side in the Sokovia Accords public debate , Jeremy Renner say it was because Cap telephone first . The only thing this led to in the patch wasgetting to see Black Widow and Hawkeye engage in hand - to - hand combat , but since they distinctly had no intention of suffer one another , the stakes were n’t high-pitched enough .

Clint Barton adjourn from being a superhero to focus on his family , so it really did n’t make gumption for him to get involved in this fight at all . But if hewasgoing to get call for – base on a divisor other than whichever side called first , as paint a picture by Renner – he ’d belike go for the safe option : the government - backed one , the one that would n’t set down him in poky away from his house .

Right side: Thaddeus Ross

Thaddeus Ross returns to the MCU inCaptain America : Civil Warafter a comparatively tenacious   absence   since his debut in 2008’sThe unbelievable Hulkand , though he ’s now been boost to Secretary of State , he ’s essentially the same character .

Ross is all about rule and order , it ’s part of what produce him such a great adversary for the unruly Hulk , and that extends befittingly to all of the other Avengers too . There ’s no way that Ross would just trust a non - government organisation with that much power and , for such a militaristic character , he ’s really quite diplomatic with the superheroes at first .

Wrong side: Sharon Carter

Sharon Carter is , like Ross , a regime role through and through . They have no powers and they ’re an appropriate fit for their Book of Job at the CIA after the collapse of S.H.I.E.L.D. However , she ’s depict to have a much more rebellious bar and much substantial standoff to Captain America .

Sharon does , of course of study , change side in a sense by helping Steve , Sam , and Bucky but it ’s ab initio confusing as to why she does n’t just go with them . By staying behind , she ’s not only effectively abandoning a serious berth   in which   she could be of more assistance , but going back to a world in which she ’s now a fugitive also .
