Netflix ’s new movieCoffee & Kareemunderuses its ripe fibre : Taraji P. Henson ’s Vanessa Manning . The latest original film for the streaming service of process champion Ed Helms as Detroit law officeholder James Coffee , who is one half of the brother bull dynamic at the cutting edge of the movie . Henson gives her some humour , some charm , and some fight throughout the film , and she make the most of her screen - time . The drollery that comes from Vanessa as she tries to realise what Coffee and Kareem have gotten themselves into is large , but she also plays the part of champion on multiple juncture . Vanessa is the one at the center of the film ’s best competitiveness sequence ( where she single - handedly takes down two crook ) and gets two heroic moments at the end of the film . She ’s responsible for convert one of the bad guy wire to aid them escape and then cease the movie by killing the main baddie .

Although this all shows just how big and crucial Vanessa is , Coffee & Kareemstill manages to underuse her by not including Vanessa in more of the flick . The pic spread with Vanessa and Coffee meeting up while Kareem is supposed to be at school day and is then only seen again in the first number when she calls Coffee . After that , she ’s reunite with Coffee and Kareem in the heart of the movie , but this panorama terminate with her being shot by a taser . Since she is knocked unconscious , Coffee & Kareemuses her state to leave her out of the primary dyad ’s next risky venture . It is only when they return that they study that she ’s subdued two criminals on her own . And then , she is snatch and becomes someone Coffee needs to make unnecessary in the third act , with her heroic minute only make out after he ’s rescued her .
consider everything that Vanessa does inCoffee & Kareem , it is dissatisfactory to see her not be more Byzantine throughout the motion picture . The movie and script understandably want her to have some of the film ’s freehanded and safe moment . That ’s what micturate the need to sideline her all the more puzzling . It feels as thoughCoffee & Kareemhad to keep trying to receive way of life to keep Vanessa out of the picture so the unbelievable mating of Coffee and Kareem could be highlighted . But , the film might have been better off playing with the dynamic of a 12 - year - old trapped in a life or dying situation with his mom and her cop boyfriend that he does n’t like .
AlthoughCoffee & Kareemdoesn’t give Vanessa as big of a part as she deserved , hopefully that will modify if a continuation ever chance . The film does n’t have a lot of sequel set up , but one is potential if the movie execute well on Netflix . SinceCoffee & Kareemleaves a fair blank slate for another adventure , there is no ground why Taraji P. Henson ’s Vanessa should n’t get a more significant part next time around .
