Sea Fever

Sea Feveris quickly becoming one of the most speak about horror films of 2020 with a lot of praise going to its frightening , quiet concept . Connie Nielsen , one of the film ’s mavin , is particularly mad to be stick at sea with a deadly parasite .

There has been a recent trend of horror pic that set deadly and unexplainableaquatic terrorsagainst unsuspicious victims , butSea Feverreally hone the form . Irish filmmaker Neasa Hardiman ’s movie strips itself down to a simple , claustrophobic film about a crew who get trapped on their ship at sea as an evolve sponge finds its fashion on display panel . Thematically , Sea Feverfeels likeAlien , but on the water , and carry with the idea , turning it into one of the good horror films of the yr .

Sea Fever (2020)

The plaster cast ofSea Feveris headline by Connie Nielsen , Dougray Scott , and Hermione Corfield . Nielsen lead the pack as Freya , one of the ship ’s more seasoned crew members , who seek to keep esprit de corps during this fearsome clock time . More significantly , she just wants to stay alive . ScreenRant was golden enough to get to talk with Connie Nielsen about her time filming the isolating horror picture , its eerie premise , and what ’s so fearful about the sea .

ScreenRant : There ’s been an interesting resurgence lately with repulsion motion picture that are set on the water . Why do you palpate this may be happening ?

Connie Nielsen : There ’s such a greatness and mystery story to the ocean that I think is appealing . It ’s very veridical . You ca n’t see very far into the ocean after a certain head and you ’re completely exposed at a sure point . That ’s scary . If you ever plunge , there ’s this severe feeling of being scupper or being very petite in this big thing .

Or maybe moving picture are just running out of horror ideas for the body politic and the air !

ScreenRant : There are a lot of parallel of latitude between this cinema andAlienand I really bang these kind of smaller exfoliation repugnance flick . How do you feel these kinds of motion-picture show can get in touch in a way that bigger slasher film needs do n’t ?

Connie Nielsen : They ’re for sure more familiar . This film create this very claustrophobic atmosphere that fits together really well with horror . There ’s this circumscribed amount of people who are immobilise in this little space with something that they do n’t understand . There ’s this lifelike latent hostility that grows out of that and makes the horror even more intense . There ’s just a horizontal surface of intimacy to it all that really compliments horror well .

Sea Fever

Something little and more intimate like this also allows our characters to sincerely get to talk , argumentation , and get to lie with each other . They get to discuss things and we get to order narration that typically are n’t covered in openhanded revulsion picture . It was a pleasure to get to distinguish and get in deepness over the sort of people who are in these small sportfishing communities in Europe .

ScreenRant : Freya is very stoical throughout this flick and she ’s not so quick to oppose as everyone else . How do you think she ’s processing everything that ’s going on here ?

Connie Nielsen : That ’s how our film director , Neasa Hardiman , really wrote the character of Freya . She wrote her to be this calm soul in the midsection of this tempest . However , she ’s also a true leader who ’s able to use kindness and an adhesion to the rules to not just be an effective loss leader , but also to live . They ’re stuck in the midriff of the forged situation and even without anything having to do with the parasite , they ’re a grouping of people who sputter to get economical work .

ScreenRant : There ’s a spiritual aspect to Freya ’s character , which becomes a really stabilize personnel for her . Was that a helpful dimension to pull from for the theatrical role ?

Connie Nielsen : I think so and it was really endearing to be capable to speak to a degree of humility with my character . For Freya and the balance of the crew , faith is n’t so much a way of deliver control over other hoi polloi or some kind of domination . It ’s really just about understanding and the acknowledgment over how little their lives are in the outstanding schema of the domain . There ’s a neat deal of pity in Freya and how she accept these force .

I also really bask this push and rend between religion and superstition that ’s explored in the moving picture . But as the plastic film shows — and accurately — there ’s a very divers work party that ’s assemble . It ’s a true image of thetrueEurope that ’s out there that ’s becoming a melt pot , just like America . We wanted to really honor that in the film as well .

ScreenRant : Did you guy wire actually get to film any of the movie out on the water ?

Connie Nielsen : We really only film the first two days on a ship and even then it was still tie to a pier . Then , after that , we displace onto a stage , so we were never really filming out in the middle of the sea . I did get to navigate the sauceboat , along with the owners , for footage used in the scope , but in reality it was all inside the studio apartment after that .

ScreenRant : Freya and Siobhan get into an interesting debate over the contamination of innocent citizenry with a parasite that ’s become circumstantially relevant in new ways with everything that ’s now going on in the universe . What ’s it like for the pic to have gained this tally Modern level of significance ?

Connie Nielsen : It was really something that we discussed and how both sides of this argument are technically right . On the one paw , each private life matter , but on the other mitt do these people have the right to put on the line other innocent life ? Freya ’s position is to let the authorities deal with that — let the professionals palm that and let ’s not act God ourselves . The diametrical opinion is that we all have individual responsibilities to our fellow residential district tonotinfect them .

It has been so interesting to see how people care the epidemic that we ’re presently in because they ’re give a hard time being clear over what ’s the right behaviour and what ’s the correct way for authorities to respond . It ’s been so interesting to see the film have this relevance now when we film it a class ago .
