Knowing that the Overlook Hotel also feeds on steam , Dan makes the dangerous gamble of bringing Abra to the haunt old hotel to lay a gob for Rose . He unleashes the hotel ’s ghosts , who he has lock up one by one over the years , and the starving specter descend on Rose and consume her until there ’s nothing left - though not before she manage to give Dan a deadly combat injury by nicking the femoral arteria in his leg . Why Danny Went Mad (& Why He Had To Die)

The Overlook Hotel is fundamentally a psychical vampire , absorbing the ghosts of the hoi polloi who die inside it , and turn them into agents of its own hunger . The spectre of the hotel were drawn to young Danny because of the shining , and continued to observe him even after he left . Jack Torrancealso had the polishing , which is why he was capable to see the ghosts of the Overlook . Rose the Hat state Dan that the steam becomes corrupted and tainted as children turn into adults , and it ’s this depravation that allow the Overlook to effectively take self-control of Jack and send him to murder his phratry . The hotel wanted young Danny to die inside its undercoat so that it could feed on him , and after he unleashes the trace from their box , they start to tip on him as well .

Unlike Jack , Dan ’s blood line into apparent madness bechance very rapidly , and when he care to corner Abra in Room 237 she realizes that the hotel is assume his face like a masquerade party . However , Dan had planned for this contingency from the beginning , by rigging the Overlook ’s kettle to explode . Abra distinguish this possessed Dan about this , and the hotel ’s desperation to continue itself outweighs the need to have Abra , give her a chance to escape . Dan ( who was really drained from the moment Rose the Hat cut back his wooden leg and caused him to take up bleeding out ) expend his last vestiges of muscularity   ensure the seat that killed his don is destruct , and exit at peace in the burning hotel ,   last reunited with his female parent .

How Danny Can Still Talk To Abra

One of the way in whichDoctor Sleepbrings Dan Torrance ’s story full circle is by having him launch the same role in Abra ’s sprightliness that Dick Hallorann once act in his . This is highlighted by the parallel of immature Danny sit on a bench with Hallorann ’s ghost at the start of the movie , and Dan subsequently sharing a workbench with Abra the first time they adjoin in literal living . The scene in which young Danny talks to Hallorann on the terrace , only for his mother to come and see Danny sitting on the bench alone , is also mirror when Abra is talking to Danny in her room at the destruction of Doctor Sleep and her female parent enters and sees Abra alone .

Danny speaking to Abra in her room does n’t mean that he ’s stuck haunting her or can not move on . As Dick Hallorann explained when his ghost visited Danny for the last sentence as an adult , prison term works other than in the afterlife , and it ’s likely that Dan will move on just like Hallorann did - except for those moments when Abra postulate him .

What Doctor Sleep’s Ending Really Means

talk toCinemaBlend , about Dan ’s alcoholism in Doctor Sleep , McGregor said , " Mike was very cleared that The Shining was a novel that was written about alcoholism and addiction , and Doctor Sleep is a novel that was written about recovery . " Part of that recuperation , for Dan , is journeying back to the start of where his alcohol addiction began , by   reelect to the Overlook Hotel and confronting the spectre of his father . During one of his AA meetings , Dan admits that since his father died when he was so young , the only mode he could remember and feel close to him was by wassail and lashing out in anger to same mode his father did . However , Jack Torrance also managed to get sober before his fateful journey to the Overlook Hotel , and Dan finds a healthier way to get to live his father by making that same journeying to sobriety .

As inThe Shining , the Overlook Hotel is a metaphor for dependence . Jack Torrance got grave after circumstantially breaking young Danny ’s arm while drunk ,   but the Overlook once again seduced him down a course towards hurting his loved ones . A primal turn point inThe Shiningis when Lloyd the barman pour Jack a drink , effectively acting like the whispering vocalism of addiction . For Dan , who became an alcoholic in imitation of his don , it makes sensation thathis Lloyd would be Jack Torrance . Unlike his father , however , Dan is able to apply the tools of retrieval to resist the enticement to decrease back into older convention , and his burning down the Overlook with himself indoors is a way of end that wheel of addiction - for Abra ’s rice beer .
