relate : Director Tom Harper Interview : The Aeronauts
While promotingThe Aeronauts , Felicity Jones sat down with Screen Rant to hash out her workplace on the film , fromreuniting with her carbon monoxide - star fromThe hypothesis of Everythingto thrash a dog out of a red-hot air balloon ( do n’t vex , the pooch is okay ! ) . She hash out the pressures of acting in such a confined quad as a balloon basket and the challenges that come from filming action scenes while wall entirely by dreary CRT screen .
The Aeronautsis out in theaters now , and expiration on Amazon Prime streaming on December 20 .
I know you dash some clobber up in the air in an actual balloon , but I imagine a lot of the moving picture is you and Eddie in a box surrounded by blue screens .
Yes . It was an interesting juxtaposition , actually . They construct a balloon for real , hand - made , that we took on a flight on our first twenty-four hours , doing these helicopter shots , wide shot of us in the initial view where they ’re taking off . So we kind of went from this incredible , utterly real experience to something that was Eddie and I in a blue room with blue walls and blue carpet for hours and hours in a very small space . We ’re unquestionably an experience in extremes .
I imagine you had to deal with this sorting of matter onStar Wars , but how much do you have to take on faith , that it ’s proceed to face good , when you ’re on the set , shaking the basket . Are you like , " This had better front nerveless in post ! "
Yeah , that ’s the affair ! It ’s interesting , because you ca n’t fudge it . When you endeavor to do it with the wobbly basket , and doing it half - Energy Department , it just see so fake . Actually , to make it expect genuine , we really had to go for it . evidently , the way it was being shot , George Steel , the DoP , was in the basketful with us . It was very intimate . You could n’t get away with it .
With not believing it ?
We had to go through those experience . There ’s one sequence where Eddie is hauling me into the basketful near the offset of the movie , and a lot of that , there ’s some real nuisance going on as we ’re doing it ! And the rainfall is lashing on us , and together , all those element , take it as believable as potential for the audience , we really had to go there .
Speaking of Eddie , I always wonder what it ’s like to re - team with a former co - adept , but not in a sequel . This has a very different tone fromThe Theory of Everything , obviously . Is there alchemy build - in with you , or do you feel like you ’re starting from starting line again ?
It feels as though we had already built that chemistry and that trust . I think that was a huge part of it . We understood each other . We had very similar ideas about things . I call up we have similar instincts . We both push each other . We do n’t breathe until we get something really interesting and strange and substantial and in effect . There ’s in spades , I feel he really bring out the best in me , and hopefully , vice - versa .
There are a mass of particular - essence driven films where almost every shot has some kind of estimator magic attached to it . But this movie is also intimate because the bulk of the film , even with flashback and such , is set in , like , this five - by - five box ! I imagine , a lot of the time , it was just the two of you and the director .
Yes . It was on the button that , actually . That ’s how it feel . It felt very straightaway . in reality , the emotional truth that these characters are going through is very raw . They ’re not super heroes . I think that is what made it so challenging , attempt to get that verisimilitude , that excited verisimilitude ( jape ) . That was really the challenge , as well as this huge spectacle . But that ’s why , to a sealed extent , it was probably much harder than when you ’re doing pure action .
Both you and Eddie , you have arcs . You cease up in dissimilar places from where you start . Even with the flashbacks , how much work does it take to enounce that with acting , without really getting to traverse a physical quad ?
The whole world has to occur in that belittled distance . It becomes a really minuscule stage . Actually , we rehearsed before we started shoot , and that was a really good style of read , how do we make this basket interesting and complex , and point the shifts and , honestly , there ’s a bountiful kinship go on with the atmospheric condition and the elements throughout this account . It ’s not just them with each other . It ’s them with the world , which is kind of a metaphor for most relationships , and how do relationships survive when the existence need dissimilar things and the individuals have their own traumas . It ’s very much a metaphor for recovery , Leslie Townes Hope , and dearest .
Yes , but I ’m so beaming they do n’t kiss in the end ! Their family relationship was not the typical whirlwind Romance language you might expect in this variety of moving picture . It ’s so rarified , even in 2019 , to detect a movie where men and cleaning lady respect each other .
They save each other . Maybe there might be something in the future tense for them , but in the film , it ’s about two souls just trying to figure out a elbow room through this crazy world . They find it ’s easier if they can do it together .
There ’s a shot very early on , your first scene , you ’re outwear this makeup that I ’ve never seen before . What was that ? You look like a wench !
Oh , the white , yes . The blank chalk . It ’s what they would have done in the field of operations in that time , in the nineteenth century . They would do this chalky substance that they ’d put on their boldness , and then these crimson , rotund circles would be the rosiness , and then they ’d do this piffling red-faced lip . It was very much the way of the meter for dramatic art . We thought , oh , that would be really interesting if she was done up like that as part of her performance . The whole thought is that she ’s made that costume herself , and she ’s done her own makeup . It ’s pretty home made .
You ca n’t get off with throwing a dog out of a red-hot air balloon unless you ’ve got a fun outfit .
Yeah , on the nose ! ( Laughs ) You ’d just look cruel .
There was a five - second space when I was like , " Oh my God , this movie is evil , " but then the little chute deployed , so it was ok .
I know . ( Laughs ) . you’re able to see the interview ’s sigh of relief .
Yes , definitely at my masking !
Humans can go through anything , but ensure the animals are okay !
Last question : I hump period moving picture , specially this geological era . I ’m just gaga over that era of vesture . Those costumes . Eddie looks so dapper . Your character ’s homemade dress is still so gorgeous .
It ’s a fascinating period , yeah .
manifestly , you did n’t make your clothes , but did you get to put a stamp on any of your wardrobe ? Like , " Ooh , I think she would wear … This one ! "
Yeah . It ’s always a collaboration , a discussion . Alex Byrne ( Elizabeth : The Golden Age , The Avengers , Doctor Strange ) is punctilious on the detail . Those costumes are as authentic as you may get . It has rank historical accuracy . I had a girdle while doing a caboodle of the stunt , which decidedly adds an component ( Laughs ) . There was a bragging inspiration from Julie Christie in various full point pic , and how she always look so New , yet of the fourth dimension . That ’s what we were going for with in Amelia ’s blouse and skirts . We desire her to feel very different from her baby , and then to have an adventurer ’s Department of Energy with what she ’s wearing .
