Henry Golding has confirmed filming is done on the G.I. JoeSnake Eyesmovie spinoff . Golding , who made his name play the dashing Nick Young in 2018’sCrazy Rich Asians , is asterisk as the titular character , take over from Ray Park from the previous two G.I. Joe unrecorded - legal action picture . The movie itself will reboot the franchise by exploring Snake Eyes ' backstory andhow he evolve into a deadly ninja commandowho famously never shows his face . Production got underway last October , with Golding starring and director Robert Schwentke ( RED ) call the shots from a script by Evan Spiliotopoulos ( Charlie ’s Angels 2019 ) .

The photo shows a lowly clapperboard for the motion picture covered in signature from , presumably , theSnake Eyescast and crew . Production started out in Vancouver last year beforemoving to Japan back in January .

Paramont is hoping third time ’s the charm for G.I. Joe , after its first two bouncy - military action movies struggle to perform as well as hope ( either critically or commercially ) . Golding is certainly a smart choice to build the rebooted G.I. Joe enfranchisement around , being a relatively untested up and comer . He ’s only continued to make a name for himself sinceCrazy Rich Asiansby delivering a serial publication of very different , yet engaging , performances inA Simple Favor , Last Christmas , andThe Gentlemenover the last two year . Whether that , in combination with the rest of the cast and the names ferment behind the scenes , will be enough to makeSnake Eyesa reach , that ’s another issue .
Joining Golding in the cast are Andrew Koji ( Warrior ) as Storm Shadow , Iko Uwais ( The Raid ) as Hard Master , Samara Weaving ( Ready or Not ) as Scarlett , Úrsula Corberó ( Money Heist ) as Baroness , Haruka Abe ( Avenue 5 ) as Akiko , Takehiro Hira ( Girl / Haji ) as Kenta , and Steven Allerick ( The Expanse ) as Snake Eyes ' father . On the opposite side of the camera , Lorenzo di Bonaventura is produce along with Stephen Davis , Josh Feldman , and Brian Goldner . The movie is being resign by Paramount Pictures and is scheduled to open in theaters this fall on October 23 , 2020 .
