In the world ofHarry Potter , the magical world is typically referred to as the wizarding macrocosm . However , the reliable sorcerous world that be alongside our real one is much richer and more complex than just wizard and witches . The wizarding world is in reality home to all way of magic creature . Some of these creatures are quite like to normal animals we ’d see in our own world , and some of them are almost human .

And just like the creatures in the normal world , the intelligence level of all of these magical creatures vary . Presumably the understanding of each mortal varies throughout the species , but each species seems to have it ’s mean intelligence level . Some of them are intimately mindless , while others seem to be fantastically cunning , sometimes seeming even smarter than humans . But these are all of the main magical creatures in Harry Potter , ranked by intelligence .

Dementors

Dementors do seem to have some variety of sense , but it ’s frankly hard to approximate how conscious and intelligent they truly are . However , intelligence agency is typically connected to some sort of rational oddity and desire to actually comprehend or see thing , andif the dementors are capable of thisthey certainly do n’t show it .

Regardless of how much intelligence is actually there , we can unequivocally say that the dementors only use their cognizance to look for out living and eat up it . raft of animals exist like this , but it does n’t bespeak anything beyond introductory functional knowingness .

Basilisks

basilisk are a terrifying puppet that seems to at least have some pretty good capacity for intelligence and consider . They are really nothing more than a gargantuan , magical snake , however the one basilisk that we ’ve met in theHarry Potterseries does seem to be fairly cagy . At the very least , it was clever enough to keep itself cover in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry .

Granted , the basilisk that was hidden by Salazar Slytherin and rediscover by Tom Riddle was likely under the command of a original during it ’s outings into the world , but it ’s difficult to say how much of what it did was under control or by it ’s own choice .

Unicorns

Although unicorn are one of the most powerful charming creatures in the intact wizarding universe ( evidently sinewy enough to be desirable of Garrick Ollivander ’s " supreme core " scepter appointment ) , it at least appears to the outside observer that aside from their wizard properties they are essentially horses with horns .

But luckily for them , horses are a pretty intelligent fauna in their own right , which makes unicorns some of the cleverer magical animal in theHarry Potteruniverse . Their survival inherent aptitude seem to be pretty on point at least , they ’re unmanageable to catch or even come by despite their immense magical power .

Dragons

Dragons are most emphatically one of themost serious magical creaturesin the world . Controlling and taming dragons is a mystery that most witches and sensation will never be able to grasp , and frankly most people who run across a dragon are lucky to come out of the encounter with their life and limb intact .

But despite their trigger-happy temperaments , dragon seem to have some judiciousness with which they exercise their power . As Rubeus Hagrid has bear witness , dragons are capable of forming bonds with humans , and they at least seem to reserve their brutal attacks for those they see as threats .

Phoenixes

Phoenixes are the last of the " supreme wand core " creatures on this listing , and they seem to be pretty superscript beingness when it comes to intelligence operation as well . capital of Arizona are extremely powerful beasts who are literally brim with magic , but as Fawkes , the phoenix that belonged to Albus Dumbledore , demonstrated , they are very adequate to of creating long term and powerful bonds with other existence .

They ’re hard to befriend , but once their friendship is earned it ’s pretty much a lifetime bond paper . And given that Fawkes has from time to time managed to save the daylight at just the right second , it would seem that his gage and problem solving science are prodigious for a bird .

Merpeople

The ways and cultivation of the merpeople is an undiscovered mystery , even to the wizarding world , but the very fact that they even have a culture denotes their passably exceptional intelligence service . They have their own language and they even create their own music , which obviously shows that they have an cerebral mental ability that is nigh or even at that of a normal human .

Merpeople have in reality had a hard and troubled relationship with the wizarding world , because they understandably see themselves as equals to witches and wizards whereas the wizarding world does not .

House Elves

House elves are fairly much for good stuck under the kicking of the wizarding world , but the wizards and witches who take advantage of them very clearly underestimate their intelligence .

They look to be a bite too frightened to rebel against those that control them , and it does seem like a few of them are sincerely consecrated to their " service " , but when they in reality need to think for themselvesthey’ve show themselves to be very capable . Dobby is the most prominent planetary house elf in the series , but he has proven himself able to think through things and come up with thought that even humans have overlook .

Centaurs

Very much like the merpeople , the centaurs of the wizarding world seem to be much unaired to man than to beast , especially when it comes to their word . The centaurs typically prefer to stay put out of the wizarding world , and the wizarding world has mistreated them enough for that restiveness to be entirely justified .

But they appear to have a complex civilization , social pecking order , and relationships , something that is moderately much adequate to a man ’s . And since there was actually a Centaurus professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry , it seems safe to assume they ’re extremely cunning .

Goblins

Goblins are undoubtedly one of the most thinking wizard creatures in the wizarding creation , and are doubtless some of the most intelligent beings on earth in general . hob are , much like sign of the zodiac elves , stick beneath the boot of the magician and witches who aim to control them , but their intellect seems to match or even exceed many humans .

The goblins are reasonably much wholly in controller of the wizarding economy and wizards seem to hardly notice , and the fact that they have managed to taciturnly take control of such a vast aspect of wizard society indicate how impertinent they really are .

Veela

Although veela are undeniably magical creatures that are not human , wizard , or crone , they are pretty darn close to world . The wizard properties of a veela are something like that of a siren , they are incredibly beautiful and seductive beast that can nearly hypnotise those around them ( but when they ’re enrage they can transform into a terrific bird - like fauna ) .

However , veela are something snug enough to human physiologically that they can actually inhume - breed with them , so it seems dependable to assume that their intellectual capacity is pretty close-fitting to a human as well .
