No book - to - motion-picture show adaptation is perfect , but for a long time , Harry Potterfans have felt thatThe Philosopher ’s Stonewas the cheeseparing to perfect that fandom got . The motion-picture show honor the integrity of the volume and even uprise dialogue straight from the source textile . It also did a good job of launching the motion-picture show fandom — without the success ofThe Philosopher ’s Stone , the rest of the movies might never have been made .

But the motion-picture show does make some changes from the book . Some are huge , some are less important , but diehard Potterheads — and especially the Ravenclaws out there — have noticed all of them .

Harry’s Eyes

Technically , we could mention this dispute for every motion-picture show , but we ’ll only weigh it forPhilosopher ’s Stone . Throughout the books , writer J.K. Rowling made a big deal of Harry ’s green eyes that were just like his mother ’s . In fact , Harry ’s eye become a downright plot point in the 7th film , when Snape ’s truthful need are revealed .

You might have noticed , however , that Daniel Radcliffe has blue eye . Is this the ending of the human beings ? No , of of course not . Especially because Geraldine Somerville , the actress that playact Harry ’s female parent , also has blue eye . So the logical system still follow : Harry ’s center are just like Lily ’s , which count intemperately on Severus Snape .

Hagrid Takes Harry to King’s Cross

In the moving-picture show , when Hagrid bursts into Harry ’s animation on his 11th birthday and shift it eternally , it ’s July 31 . After they shop in Diagon Alley the next daytime and get Harry everything he needs , the next thing we see is Hagrid dropping Harry off at King ’s Cross for the power train .

But the train leaves from Platform 9¾ on September 1 . Did Harry spend the full month of August with Hagrid ? In the book , Harry is returned to the Dursleys ’ theater to eagerly enumerate down the days until he can leave for Hogwarts . They take him to King ’s Cross on September 1   throw off him off without making sure he safely encounter his train , as the Dursleys are wo nt to do .

When Harry Met Draco

Speaking of that misstep to Diagon Alley … film - Harry does n’t meet Draco at Madame Malkin ’s gown For All Occasions . In the record , Draco Malfoy is a snide son who is baffle his gown hem at the same time Harry walks in . They do n’t change name , but Malfoy does say some mean affair about Hagrid , causing Harry to dislike him immediately . They get together again on the Hogwarts Express , where Draco say Harry not to make supporter with “ the wrong sort . ”

In the film , Harry and Draco do n’t meet until they ’re already in the castle . Draco still says his line about the Weasleys , and Harry still commence to break down back at him with one of his key signature witty retort .

McGonagall’s Sass

In the books , especiallyPhilosopher ’s Stone , McGonagall is a marvelous professor and watches out for Harry , but she ’s also a bit of a worrier . The first chapter open up with her interrogate Dumbledore ’s decision to leave Harry with the Dursleys . ( She had a point . ) In the movie , she ’s less openly worrisome and is a bit saucy . Who could forget the classic commutation she had with Ron Weasley when he and Harry were late for social class ? She ruminate about transfigure them into pouch sentinel so they might be on prison term .

It ’s too uncollectible this awful interchange never happened in the books because it makes us all love McGonagall just a short spot more .

Underplaying Hermione’s Role

In the conflict against Professor Quirrell in the book , there is one more challenge after the giant Bromus secalinus exercise set : Harry and Hermione have to use logic to outfox Snape ’s protective barrier to the Stone . It ’s a riddle of seven potions , one that moves the drinker forward , one that sends them back , one that kill them , and four others that are fairly innocent but also useless to them in the journeying . In the book , Hermione figures it out while Harry stands by helplessly .

No such challenge survive in the pic . After the chess game , Harry immediately confront Quirrell , eliminating the moment when we all see how brilliant and useful and utterly necessary Hermione was going to be for Harry ’s journey . Maybe they made the change to alleviate the barbarous moment in the book when Harry and Hermione will Ron behind after he was injured . Or maybe they just thought it would be ho-hum to watch . Nevertheless , it ’s a all important moment of character development that was disappointing to lose .

That Heartbreaking Birthday Cake

After Vernon Dursley loses his mind and takes the family to an abandoned cabin on a rock in the ocean , Harry counts down to his natal day alone . In the book , he simply watch the minutes tick by on Dudley ’s watch , wondering if the Dursleys will remember his 11th birthday at all . But Hagrid get at the accident of midnight , push that cerebration mightily out of Harry ’s mind .

In the picture , the moment is a yank - at - your - tenderness - strings sob fest . In the dirt on the wicked trading floor , Harry draws himself a patty and writes “ glad Birthday ” in it . He drift out the “ candles ” he create alone . If you did n’t cry when you see this … how ?

Ron’s Best Seven Words

In many ways , Ron Weasley is the character reference that loses most of his strengths in the book - to - movie adaptations . For masses who ’ve only watched the movies and never take the books , Ron seems like a moody and useless git . Not true in the books .

However , The Philosopher ’s Stonedoes give Ron one astonishing moment that he in reality did n’t get in the book . In both adaptation , Hermione gets mad at the boys after their midnight escapade , saying , “ I ’m going to layer before either of you hail up with another apt idea to get us killed . Or worse , expelled . ” But it ’s only in the movie that Ron replies , “ She postulate to sort out her anteriority . ” Iconic .

What Happened to Peeves?

Peeves the Poltergeist does n’t make an show inThe Philosopher ’s Stone , which is a tragedy , because he was one of the best source of comical relief in the books . Peeves ' pranks and birdsong always hit the everlasting blend of malicious - but - humourous . So why was he cut out ?

former British comedian Rik Mayall was in reality cast to play Peeves inthe movie but was cut after three week of cinematography . Apparently he kept making the extra giggle when they were n’t supposed to . Who knows if that ’s actually why his part was cut , buthe did subsequently go on to say that “ the motion-picture show was s**t,”so maybe it was for the best after all .

The Welcome Feast

In the book , the first class are sorted into their new business firm during the Welcome Feast . First , the Sorting Hat sings a strain , then the first years are sorted alphabetically ( putting Potter toward the end , which score him spooky ) , then the Headmaster move over a speech . Dumbledore ’s speech was especially memorable if a bite strange : “ Nitwit ! Blubber ! Oddment ! Tweak ! ” Finally , the school vocal is sung — and this only happens once in the books .

In the movie , however , a lot of that changed . The first years were sort out completely out of alphabetic society , then Dumbledore did n’t give his strange - but - amusing speech communication . Most significantly , The Sorting Hat did n’t peach its song , which is too regretful because we learn a pile about the divergence Hogwarts house through it . evidently it all would have taken a lot of time , but losing it all   take a little of the silliness out of Hogwarts .

The Name of the Forest

At the welcome banquet every year , Dumbledore gives a world-wide delivery . It often welcomes raw scholar and remind citizenry of schooltime rules , normally with a mo of a look at the Weasley twins to check that they ’re listen . InThe Philosopher ’s Stone , Dumbledore says , “ First long time should note that the woodland on the grounds is forbidden to all pupils . ” afterward , lector ascertain that it ’s called the Forbidden Forest .

In the motion-picture show , " Forbidden " became " Dark " for no clear reason . Except … perhaps calling it the Dark Forest take a shit more sense , because saying it ’s forbidden , then sending students in there for detention   — at midnight , no less   — does n’t make a whole lot of good sense . But then again , there are a fortune of things about the wizarding world that seem strange to us Muggles .
