The world ofHarry Potteris full of complex characters . So complex and divisive are some of these characters , that many fans still have yet to add up to a complete agreement on their attributes or status in the fandom .
Snapeis without a dubiousness one of those character . Love him or hate him , you ’ve sire to let in that Snape did some pretty ugly things in his time at Hogwarts . Perhaps some of his worst behavior was directed at the students . These were children who did not make or deserve his hatred , and they had no path to truly defend themselves against his barbs .
As such , we sense compel to name the ten uncollectible things Snape did to his young students .
Favored The Slytherins Over Most of the Student Body
allow ’s start with the most obvious model . Snape constantly and consistently favored his own theatre , Slytherin , over the balance of the Hogwarts student . That included everything from giving ( or taking ) sign points , to whose side he took in a fray . This even went as far as to what sort of punishment he handed out . Or in the case of the Slytherins , what punishments he turn down to give out .
The bias was extremely unjust , for obvious reasons . Additionally , it created a roadblock for any scholarly person not in Slytherin who want to learn about potions . We do n’t jazz for sure how many career ask the skill … but it is concerning notwithstanding .
Mudblood
Our second example comes from the time when Snape was a student . When he was untested , Snape was very much a fan of Voldemort and the Dark Arts . It ’s not something he entirely lost , either . He took a raft of Voldemort ’s policies to heart , including pedigree purity .
He even called his good ( and only ) friend a Mudblood — the most hurtful term you’re able to think of . And it come to him so chop-chop that you know it had crossed his intellect once or twice before . Thus , we ’re interested about how he feels about his students . principally , less " double-dyed " students . After all , Snape is the head of Slytherin — a house known for its innocence — and he favors them so much it ’s strong to tell how far it all goes .
Insufferable Know-It-All
One of Snape ’s favorite fair game was the brilliant Hermione Granger . Now , we do n’t know his motif here , but we can guess . It believably had at least a short bit to do with her friendship with Harry Potter . to boot , her splendor made it harder to prefer the Slytherins .
No matter the cause , it ’s clear that Snape loathed that Hermione was so smart and so unforced to answer any and all questions during class . He even call her an ' unsufferable know - it - all " at one percentage point , even though she was literally doing nothing more than answering his questions .
Bullied The Boy He Was Protecting
No matter how you look at it , it ’s clear that Snape have a go at it execrate Harry Potter . Harry , the son he had promised to do his dependable to keep live . Harry , the son of the woman he loved . And yet , because Harry looked like his begetter , the man Snape loathed , he was more than willing to rack the child .
Even Snape ’s first words to Harry were snide and fell . He made no attempt to see the unspoilt side of Harry , and or else actively enjoyed picking on and belittling him . Perhaps because it was something he could n’t do to the late James Potter .
Stopped Teaching Harry
This one might not technically fall under bullying , but conceive about it . Snape had promised Dumbledore that he would prepare Harry to close his thinker to Voldemort ’s . And yet the 2d it became hard , ( learn : the moment Harry dove into Snape ’s most unenviable storage ) he refused to teach Harry ever again .
move over what was at stake , this is fairly atrocious . We all know that what Harry did was wrong , but Snape was the grownup in this situation . He should have act like one . Getting tempestuous is one thing — but what he did pass too far . The consequences were disastrous .
His Targeted Hatred of Neville Longbottom
Perhaps the bad thing Snape did over the line of the novels was torment Neville . Snape seemed to truly love hating the male child , and doing everything he could to make him miserable . It was inhuman how much Snape enjoyed doing it .
He pock Neville so much that his Boggart turned into Snape — a truthful mark that Snape was the thing that Neville venerate most in living . Think about that for a minute . This was no idle concern or intimidation . This went so much profoundly and was so much more insidious than that .
There are so many good example of his behavior towards Neville they necessitate to be included separately ( see below ) . But as a whole , Snape rack Neville every undivided Potions socio-economic class , which made Neville ’s potion inevitably rick out worse . It was almost like Snape planned it .
Public Humiliation
Snape did n’t just torture Neville within the confines of his classroom . On at least two occasion , s Snape demand it upon himself to minimize Neville in front of a crowd , including at least one other professor . The first clock time was during Dueling Club , where he mock Neville ’s lack of acquisition to Lockhart .
The second time was in front of the rest of the Defense Against the Dark Arts social class , and once again he was " warning " the prof of Neville ’s incompetence . Thankfully , Lupin ignore the dig and or else did what he could to elicit Neville ’s hard drink in a subtle manner .
“I See No Difference”
As note , Snape loved hating on several Gryffindor characters , including Hermione Granger . But Snape took his mocking too far . No teacher should ever make play of a student for the way they look . specially not when those students are teen and thus , peculiarly vulnerable . Yet that ’s exactly what he did .
When Hermione was hit with an engorgement magical spell , her sawbuck teeth begin to rapidly grow , rapidly becoming too large for her human face . Snape stated that he " saw no difference . " This was cruel and completely inappropriate .
All The Times He Tried To Get Harry Expelled
Let us not forget all of the times Snape visit for harsher punishment in response to Harry ’s action , even when it was n’t his seat to say so — that would be either the Headmaster ’s or Head of House ’s Book of Job . On more than one occasion , Snape threatened Harry with expulsion , even though he did n’t have any right hand to do so .
We ’re not sure if this was all due to his hate of Harry — or if he really did think that Harry would be safer back at home . But we do n’t really buy that the latter is potential . So yeah , it ’s believably just hatred . Which is all sorts of messed up . Remember that expulsion would result in Harry suffer his baton and thus , access to thaumaturgy .
The Time He Wanted to Poison Trevor
We ’ve already talked about how Snape hated Neville , and how he tortured him the most out of all of the role . And even by Snape standard , this last action operate too far .
He once imperil to feast a potion Neville made to Trevor , his anuran . If the potion was made properly , it would turn Trevor into a toadstool . If made improperly , it would envenom Trevor . Given that Snape expect the potion to be wrong , that entail that he was fully planning on poisoning Neville ’s beloved deary . In fact , when Trevor squinch instead of perished , Snape train house points away from Gryffindor . Can you imagine how that must have felt for Neville ? Or how ugly you ’d have to be , in decree to recall that sort of doings is ok ?
