The inventor of the LEGO Minifigure Jens Nygaard Knudson has died at the age of 78 . Knudson was responsible for the conception of the LEGO build that was introduced to the public in 1978 , which has since become an iconic build for the globally know brand . The LEGO Minifigure , also called minifigs , are known for their interchangeable circular head , hands and square - shaped body , and have been a fan preferent since their initial release .
Knudson was a designerfor the Danish toy fellowship from 1968 to 2000 , with his creative thinking reaching beyond the LEGO Minifigure . He also helped to make the LEGO Castle and classic LEGO Space sets . He was praised by his fellow worker for his creativity and , in the viewing of his decease , laud for the legacy he leaves at LEGO .

Knudsen suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ( ALS ) and passed away on Feb. 19 in Denmark from complications with the disease . He is survived by his wife , Marianne Nygaard Knudsen . ALS is a disease that impacts nerve cell in the encephalon and spinal electric cord .
