When scampering down the road , seek to get away the riders , the four hobbits hide under an overhang on the side of the road . The black rider looks over them , seemingly smelling their bearing , and Frodo is about to put the ring on . This would have wholly betray their position and Frodo would have been taken and killed . Thankfully , Sam slapped his near friend and the journey was prolong .
The Nazgul In Osgiliath
After being take absorbed by Faramir , Sam and Frodo are hold in Osgiliath , where Faramir and a contingent of Gondor soldier prepare to fight off the orc invasion . Unfortunately for them , a Nazgul arrives and the struggle drop dead rather poorly .
In the midst of the battle , Frodo feel the drag of the halo and decide to wander out across a bridge to have a star competition with the Nazgul . At the very end , when Frodo stands over the flaming fires of Mount Doom , the only place where he can convulse the halo , pull through the Earth , and become the hero that he never ask to be , Frodo falters . Rather than confound the ring , he cash in one’s chips full - on Isildur and takes it for himself . A skirmish with Gollum ensues and both descend over the shelf , but wait !
