I ’m really excited to tattle to you aboutDaniel Is n’t Real . I talk to Patrick the other day , and he was with child . We mouth about the toxic masculinity that his character represents within you , but how he ’s kind of like a daimon that ’s inside of everyone , but hands in special . I was wonder if you could talk a bit about that and how that kind of permeated your execution ?
That ’s certainly the lens through which I was most viewing Daniel ’s influence on Luke . I think there is a lot in this film that is nonobjective , that is metaphor , and I think that ’s howling , because we ’re not tell apart you what to cogitate about it , what to feel about it . We ’re just providing a floor for you to envision your own experience onto . But in my experience and what I was kind of most attract to about the story and their relationship , is that Daniel is this voice in his question , more or less , that is instructing him about what it means to become a human being , in a lot of ways . The language that he utilize about woman , he treat women as if they are some kind of getable object . He talks about " getting " girls . He ’s very predatory in that way of life . So , yeah , I remember that , for me , Daniel represent this culture , the thought mental process that a fate of young boy and young man experience as of the essence thought patters for male maturity … Which is hopefully something that I require to challenge . And I hope that this film , perhaps , testify the nastiness and toxicity of that thought process .
I by all odds think it does , and I love it for that .
And , you love , Daniel is this kind of creature in his head . He ’s showing Luke a sort of self - authority , but it is inherently toxic , inherently destructive . You know , even before things get really out of hand , you may tell that Luke is exhaust by this . I mean that it ’s my destination to provide an empathetic character , so you may see how he could get manipulated through the cultivation of this thinking process , into becoming someone who is dangerous to himself and the masses around him . Hopefully , see that will supply some kind of empathy for those citizenry who are vulnerable in our society and do become dangerous to themselves and to others .
It ’s something like , I ’m thinking about people watching the moving picture , and I wonder if there are some who do n’t take in where it ’s going until way after everyone else has , and what their reaction will be .
Right . I think a lot of people did n’t get that Rorschach is a forged bozo in Watchmen until , like , very recently , you have intercourse ? ( Laughs ) There ’s in spades … It can take a long time . It is pernicious , but I think some of the adept stuff is where something befall and it might take a second … Because if Daniel was instantly , manifestly malevolent , then why would Luke want to go with him ? These evil , toxic mentalities have a certain attractiveness to them , do n’t they ? Young boys who are awkward or aflutter or anxious , they find ego - sureness in a direction of looking at the humans that is toxic . Like , of course it ’s locomote to be attractive to them , because they gain self - confidence through it , they think that ’s what it intend to be a adult male , and what men " merit , " and it ultimately becomes a tragical affair later on .
It ’s like a red-hot saltation that ’s actually a mariner stone pit .
In preparing for this , I look at that as the primary lens through which I would process this matter . I translate a lot of pretty dark incel message board and stuff . I was go around there , I watched that fu * * * * as * * * * * Elliot Rodger , his pronunciamento , and these variety of guys who enable each other . These people do n’t come out of a vacuum . They come out of these residential area , and these biotic community are propagating a certain kind of acculturation and worldview that is also not coming out of a vacancy . It is come out of hundred of patriarchal smart set . It ’s very easy to hate these people , multitude who eventually become terrorists , and horrible individuals , but there ’s also something to understanding that the issue is a systemic one . A lot of these people end up in these situations because of culture that circumvent them , that worm their mode into their ear , making them believe that a human is this , or a adult male is that , and if they ’re not a man , what are they ? I ’ve experienced that , I think everyone who produce up a male experiences this idea of what it ’s supposed to mean to become a humankind from a son . You know , some mass get favorable with the multitude they have around them to teach them , that a man can be complicated , can find thing , can be vulnerable . But other the great unwashed are n’t always as lucky . I think Luke has this risky influence that gives him some self - self-assurance , but is ultimately really toxic , and he learns the knockout way , through deep tragedy , what that can do to a person .
That ’s unbelievable . I love when a movie can be about so many things , can be a writing style flick , so to speak , while being so thematically and psychologically dense .
That ’s my perceptual experience of what the character meant to me , but what ’s so wonderful about cinema and musical style films especially , is that , through extraction , we can all experience our own experiences through this optical prism . I also hope that what it says about mental illness is relevant to people , and all these other kinds of relationship can also sit there and be there and be there for you and everyone else without my own take on it !
perfectly . And plus , there ’s an awful sword fight !
And there ’s a steel fight ! There are cool particular effects ! I got to put on a cool rubber masque and become a spaghetti monster , and that ’s what I ’ve always wanted to be .
