Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

ThePirates of the Caribbeanseriesboasts five motion-picture show ' worth of heroes , anti - torpedo , villain , and plenty of gray - area   figure in between . It ’s famous for characters changing sides like the tides . But some have stood out more than others .

There were sure   fibre the buff want to see more of — and still might , if therebootsees the light of day — and others they could have lived without .   Take a look back through all five movies at the skilful and bad villains to take on Captain Jack Sparrow and his bunch and live to tell the tale . Or not .

WORST: Ian Mercer

" Who ? " you might be asking . Mercer is the one - annotation soldier of fortune on a   raging   toot against pirates . Mostly , he suffers by dint of   working for   Lord Cutler Beckett ( we ’ll handle with him later ) . Mercer does all the sordid work ; as Beckett ’s supporter , he transport out some seriously gruesome deeds . But , he ’s not memorable .

In   a sea of villains , he sinks .   Mercer   murders Governor Weatherby Swann , captures the Black Pearl ,   and finally assumes control of The Flying Dutchman . Yet somehow , he does n’t leave much of a lasting impression . The serial is dear off without Mercer and the eternal sleep of the East India Trading Company .

BEST: Pintel & Ragetti

These pirates are a software deal . Together , they make for one of the unspoilt villainous couplet . The loveable oafs became such fan favorites that they survive the rest of the Black Pearl crowd and landed roles in the second and third motion picture , too .

Pintel and Ragetti   might be comedic rilievo , but they were passably dangerous while operating as members of Barbossa ’s fearsome crew . The tag - squad duo did n’t persist scoundrel beyond the first installment , but that ’s only a will to how   great   they were .

WORST: Calypso

While Tia Dalma get in as an ally to Captain Jack and company , she exits as one of the worst scoundrel . Calypso , as she turns out to be , is a merciless ocean goddess scorned by her old flaming Davy Jones .   Not that the third movie was n’t already littered ,   but things take a turn for the unusual when Calypso must be exempt from her human bond certificate .

She breaks out of blown-up writhing forget me drug and transforms into a heavyweight . It ’s here she becomes a true villain : She create a whirlpool to even out the playing field between both sides at war ,   wreaking more damage than anyone else in the moving picture . Arguably , it would have been better to leave her as Tia Dalma and not   introduce   a third - routine antagonist at all .

BEST: James Norrington

James Norrington first appears as a British skipper — presently turned commodore — and a foe to the pirates . While he would n’t be villainous in   the literal world , he ’s a outstanding transparency to the anti - hero in Captain Jack : All responsibility , dignity , and industry .

For the most part , Norrington always remain on the controvert side , making audience root against him when he look for to   marry   Elizabeth Swann , capture Jack Sparrow , and most of all , when he betrays the agonist and joins Cutler Beckett in the conflict against pirates . But viewers ca n’t help but love him , especially for the way he goes out : As a hero giving his life for Elizabeth .

WORST: Angelica

Admittedly , the fourthPirateswasn’t the strongest pleasure trip when it come to the plot and , especially , the villains . Angelica , played by Penelope Cruz , becomes   the is - she - or - isn’t - she girl of Blackbeard and   love stake   to Jack .   While a true   concubine for Jack could ’ve been an interesting concept , she instead dally into tired tropes of female character .

Angelica first meets Jack as a young and innocent cleaning lady and , after a momentary love story , he disappears until the game of the movie necessitates a reunion .   ( Yes , this is the same   story as Marion Ravenwood and Indiana Jones inRaiders of the Lost Ark , and no , itdidn’t oeuvre thereeither . ) With a phenomenal actress and novel twists on board , the squad could ’ve modernise a stronger villain in Angelica beyond such stereotype .

BEST: Armando Salazar

In the   opening move moments ofDead Men Tell No Tales , Henry Turner ’s ship goes up in flaming and descend into chaos as sparks literally vanish and an undead crew   takes out   everyone   on base . Then , to the melodic phrase of electric cello bowed stringed instrument , Captain Armando Salazar   staggers aboard . With that , Salazar repose claim to the best ingress in the franchise .

Javier Bardem   reinvigorated   the a la mode   installment ofPirates of the Caribbeanwith his alone dignity and ingenious physicality . Not to mention , the shipwreck force of Salazar and his humans were pretty cool . Like the villains before him , Salazar has beef with Jack Sparrow , but the 5th picture show elevates their engagement by fleshing out their joint backstory   through a flashback that also happens to be   one of the movie ’s strong scenes .

WORST: Edward Teach

Despite being billed   as the fearsome Blackbeard and encounter by the excellent Ian McShane , Captain Edward Teach was the most   underwhelming scoundrel in the series . Teach is intelligibly a carbon written matter of the   practiced Barbossa , right down to his entering : slog rum on a sorcerous ship in the thick of a   unknown   stirring trouble on board .

But   moving   rophy around pales   in comparability   to the   skeletal   night circus   that ensues in the first moving picture .   In the increasingly supernatural dealership , Blackbeard — by all accounts , a normal bozo — ends up slow .   A baddie is also only as in effect as his bunch ; the zombified   grunts   do n’t   really remain firm up to the plagiarist of motion picture past .

BEST: Hector Barbossa

Played to assuredness by Geoffrey Rush , Barbossa is the scene - stealing pirate forever crossing swords with Jack Sparrow . With his wraith tarradiddle , wasted work party , cursed backstory , and trademark hat — really big ones — Barbossa is a formidable peer for Jack and finally becomes the well pirate of all , find the seas in the fifth flick .

Only the honorable villain endure long enough to see themselves become the rooter - favored . He ’s the only   scoundrel   to appear in all five movies , all because his first foray was instantly iconic .   And that , ladies and man , is how   you sign up to star in one movie and take the air away with the franchise .

WORST: Cutler Beckett

Lord Cutler Beckett   does everything he can to rid the sea of pirates , but he ’s the real flagellum of the series . Wily and manipulating ,   audiences retrieve him by his calm deportment and that self-satisfied look he has on his face the   integral clock time . From his introduction to his last vista , the   movies   render   overly hard to make him seem nerveless .

Pirates of the Caribbeanis known for thrill supernatural elements , so that makes it difficult to consider that a bozo like Beckett can bring an ocean of villain to their knees . Somehow , we ’re meant to believe he stays one footprint in front of every pirate leave stand . He ’s responsible for for the weakest plot of land in the pic and , therefore , reset the top spot as the worst villain inPirates of the Caribbean .

BEST: Davy Jones

Davy Joneshas it all : A sea wolf entrance , great composition euphony by Hans Zimmer , and a totally unique look . As far as sidekicks go , the Kraken is pretty epic , too . But he   is n’t but boil down to   impressive   effect ; he becomes   the affection of the account ( quite literally ) , elevated by a memorable   performance   from Bill Nighy and a affectingly tragic backstory .

He ’s such a great scoundrel , in fact , the reboot will reportedly focus on him . He   made a surprise reappearance at the death ofDead Men Tell No Tales ,   haunting the dreams of Will Turner . Or was he ? With a wink of his celebrated claw on the screen , it seems that Davy Jones   will extend his sovereignty as the bestPirates of the Caribbeanvillain in a newfangled movie .
