Galaxy Questwas your feature film debut . Did you get to study the script beforehand ? What was your launching to this function ?
I ca n’t remember if I learn the script when I auditioned or not . But I do remember that we had a board read . They do n’t do those as much any longer , but they used to do them , back in the 24-hour interval . They ’d get all the actors and executive and everyone show the moving picture in a large room . I ’m telling you , that mesa read , I wish they had shoot it . It was so rum . It was my first movie , so I did n’t recognize what was good and what was not good , but I just knew that if they could summate some decent special effects to this thing , it was gon na kill !
One thing that ’s become fable about this picture show , now that you name the mesa read , is that it was in the first place supposed to be rated R , with a batch more cursing . There ’s a not bad niggling import where you may clearly see Sigourney Weaver say the F - word , even though it ’s knight over with the Bible " screw . " Was the mesa read rated universal gas constant ?
I do n’t remember how much cursing was in that version . I really do n’t remember . I did n’t even know that . I did n’t know it was going to be R. I do that Tony Shalhoub ’s character reference was supposed to be a stoner . I believe , in earlier drafts , he was smoking big joint , and that ’s why he ’s so mellow and , like , " Hey , how ’s it going . " And his heart are kind of half - shut and he ’s always athirst , he ’s always snacking . So I call up he was a big lapidator in earlier draft . They kind of trimmed most of that out , but kept the character .
In dividing line to Sam Rockwell , who seems to be spiel a very coke - out part .

look at your career , do you hound your trajectory back toGalaxy Quest ? Do you believe this is the movie that spread doors for you to become the star that you are ?
I do n’t think it opened any doors for me , but I do think that , after shin a longsighted time in New York City , I came out to L.A. , and I almost right away booked a small part inGalaxy Quest , which was in reality in the beginning supposed to be larger . It was suppose to be through the entirety of the shoot , but I also had hold a cowcatcher on NBC calledThe Expendables(no intercourse to theSylvester Stallone film series ) , and I also booked a small part inAlmost Famous , which was another DreamWorks film shooting that same summer . I was in bothGalaxy QuestandAlmost Famous , both DreamWorks films , snap in the summertime of ' 99 . I thought , " Oh my God , I ’ve get it made ! I ’m gon na act upon non - stop ! I just did a pilot and these two picture , this is amazing ! " And I right away did n’t work again for a year . The next photographic film I did wasHouse of 1000 Corpses , and then I got a guest star onCharmed , play a demon alchemist . So it was n’t a sky arugula to the top after doing these two movies .
It ’s so interesting . I think many people do n’t have the heart to be a working thespian , to take the risk of not having work in between task . Back then , or even experience , can you be choosy with role ? Does it take nerves of steel to turn down a part ?
Yeah , I never really had to say " no " to that many roles . There are a couple of roles I said " no " to that I find too , kind of like , gross , that I just did n’t want to participate in , or the writing was just too bad . I have n’t really had to shell out with that . Even now , I ’m pretty well known , but I still have to try out . I still try out and not get roles , stuff like that . People have this concept that since I played Dwight I ’m getting offer dateless theatrical role , but it ’s a little tougher than that .
function back to the motion-picture show , since it was your feature of speech plastic film debut , what was your experience like on set ? Did you have any kind of stifle - jerked meat reaction when you first see the costume and make - up and hair you had to put on ?
All I commend is that it was all so new to me .
So there was no frame of reference for you , like , " This is weird , but compare to what ? "
It was just all so fresh to me , and exciting ! I remember when I got suit , they had to measure every in of my trunk because they had to make these tin foil niggling outfits . I had no idea that I was going to have a wig and then that makeup all over . I thought it was really cool and exciting , that ’s all I remember .
Kinda building off that , I spent a calendar month on the set of a movie last year and I find out so much about what happens on a flick solidifying , and it was amazing to ascertain so many creative person do individual workplace that added up to a large whole . ForGalaxy Quest , was there anything you learn on that set that you ’ve carried with you to today ?
In a deleted scene with Tony Shalhoub , we ’re in the locomotive room . I had a bunch of technical gobbledygook . I keep go up on my line , I could n’t remember all the proficient gobbledygook . I will say , I did learn that anytime as an thespian when you have to spout some information like that , you have to Isidor Feinstein Stone - frigid memorize it , you have to put way more work into memorizing that . It ’s so unvoiced . You just ca n’t wing it or recall it . I was like , " The molecular charger within the spherionic distributor had a capacitance military rating of … " And you have to really work out severely on it . I did con that . But I estimate , too , I remember the auditory sense . I just had a lot of sport , I was have a lot of fun with the alien graphic symbol . I did n’t have sex if it was right or wrong or whatever , but I learn I could be myself and have fun and I ’ll be able-bodied to get theatrical role . That was coolheaded to learn .
