Screen Rant had the luck to speak with Witwer about the series , the cast , the movement , and his hopes for the future tense of DC Universe All Star Games .
Screen Rant : It sort of goes without tell that you ’re a certified expert on tabletop use - playing , so I ’m glad I get to let the cat out of the bag with you–
You bonk what ’s funny is when you were aver that , I ’m think , “ No I ’m not – I suck at this . ” And then I was like , " Wait , I have been doing this for 30 year . Oh okay , well I guess I ’ve play a game or two . ” You ’re proper , I do n’t recognize if I ’m an expert yet , but I ’m puzzle out on it .
Your partner in this , Freddie Prinze , Jr. would n’t say that you ’re the ' skillful ' Game Master he ’s act with for fear of offending people , but did say you ’re his favorite–
Was that on the criminal record ? Is that going out someplace ? Yes ! Yes ! Well you acknowledge , here ’s the matter with Freddie . I could n’t say enough nice things about him . I met him in a recording for Star Wars Rebels and the guy could n’t have been sweeter and nicer to me as I rove onto his show , and he was so supportive during that first record . He would sit in the John Wilkes Booth with me and Taylor while we would do scenes that he was not in , and just fold his heart and it would be story - clock time . We would be doing the scene and he would be flop behind us just sitting , you know , with his back against the bulwark . Eyes close , listening to us do our scenes . And boy , have an audience like that , that ’s that enthusiasm that helps your workplace . And it ’s the same matter with the DC Universe All Stars . Having a participant like Freddie , who is so fun and so funny and so cocksure . It helps you do your job as a secret plan master .
So you have that passion , and you have your past work with Mr. Jon Lee Brody , and Gegghead , like you said . How did that pitch into what became DC Universe All Star Games ? How did that passionateness for the DC characters and RPG collide into this series to make it a no - brainer ?
I ’ll tell you why it ’s a no brainer . It ’s a no brainer because Freddie is a friend of mine , and I would bet on with him if we had time , you bed , we would just go and do it when we had time or do it for liberal . So when Freddie ’s like , “ Let ’s do it in front of a photographic camera ! ” That ’s not – that ’s yeah ! This is something I would love to do with him anywhere . We ’re game fanatics and RPG maniacs because we love it . So Freddie goes , “ Yeah , I desire to do this ” – I do n’t really have to believe about it , because I care playing games with him . I ’ll tell you what ! If Freddie was not so pleasant and fun to act as games with , the reply would be “ No . ” I would be meddlesome . But the fact is that he can kind of volunteer me for any of this stuff because I really like flirt with him .
Your role as the DC Universe All Star Game Master is sort of take the bus , proper ? So what kind of experience can viewers expect ? I imagine a part of your job was making certain that you ’re represent to those who jazz , and fledgling who might have intercourse the DC Universe more than the tabletop back one ? Were you familiar with the biz going into this ?
I had a version of the DC Universe or the DC RPG from the ' 80s . It was called The Batman Role Playing Game . Which was essentially the same formula and it was a sliver off of that secret plan , to endeavor to draw people into the proper DC game . I had the Batman biz and was aware of it . Never play it , but , was very aware of it . I had read the rules when I was a kid , so when he say , “ Yeah , Yeah – that RPG ! ” I ’m like , “ Yeah I know about it , but I ’ve never played it . ” And when I reviewed it , and I take care at it , it definitely occurred to me : all the engineering science that is listed in this biz – for example let ’s take Batman ’s service program belt , I shame his public utility company belt with my cellphone . You know what I mean ? He ’s got like a micro cassette recorder that records for 30 minute and he ’s incur a microfilm camera . I ’m like , “ You suck Batman . I get cooler poppycock on my Google Pixel . ”
So for that reason I suppose to Freddie , " I recollect this game has to take place in the 80 ’s , and we could have a lot of merriment with that . " That led us down a itinerary when I was developing the characters and developing the report , to who I was when I was much youthful . And I thought , well we were all kids and a lot of ' fourscore moving-picture show – maybe John Hughes movies were about young people in the worldly concern . I think that ’s what this has to be about . Everyone has to be a teenager , and it just happens to take place in the DC Universe . So you know , the idea of feeling socially ostracized , especially since people who played RPGs … we kept that stuff secret back in the day . We did n’t countenance anyone hump , and we felt like we were social outcasts anyways . So to make the principal characters a grouping of social misfit seemed thematically appropriate for an RPG plot that would be broadcast , you know , in a eldritch mode a coming full rotary , being that we were all these societal misfit and now we ’re doing it in public , so it ’s kinda neat .
I have to ask about the cast you have piece for this mission , and where they range in terms of temporary expedient , creativity , or just levels of chaos you ca n’t mayhap hope to contain .
Well because I ’m admirer with three out of the four role player , and Xavier is now a newfangled champion of mine , I just needed a little intel on who he was as a person to develop a persona for him . They were great , I mean they ’re just , they ’re pal of mine . You know , when you have a with child group of people around a tabular array play a game together , it ca n’t go wrong . When you have just the good mass about the table , and I dare say that was the right-hand chemical group , and Xavier being the guy that I was the least conversant with , he came up with some of the most hilarious , amazing things to do for his character . I loved it ! I absolutely know it ! sure enough they took it in unexpected area which is what you want your players to do . You bonk , you want to be surprised by your players . But I will also say that Freddie , at the end of the game … all of them surprised me ! Claire did some incredible , baronial thing that I think perhaps that she would have fun doing the reverse , and she was a very interesting , grey character . Morally greyish character . But I will say that Freddie does something at the last installment that thematically made the whole thing worthwhile . You could n’t have written him … I mean , in my idle dream as a game master I was hoping someone would do what Freddie does in the last episode . He does this matter , and you just go , “ My god – if this was a movie or TV show , this is absolutely in the last episode . This moment ! correctly here ! This is what it ’s all about ! This is great ! He got the theme ! His character ’s discharge is complete – this is amazing ! ”
How did the plot maintain up ?
It was interesting , because RPG ’s mechanically were quite a second different then , and in this example you were rolling and then you were consult a chart every time you rolled . That ’s not really how we do things anymore in the industry . But it was fun to go back to those , to throwback to those rules and for the meter it was a reasonably well digestible organisation . In the case of this , you know , Breakfast League DC Universe game , it was not difficult to simplify certain things so the player could jumpstart right into it . It was not difficult .
When it comes to the DC Comics Universe , it is am honored task to welcome a young reader or a Modern devotee in , one story at a metre . It seems like you ’re getting to do that in two different way here , with the DCU and this type of gambling . Was it part of your end with this show to invoke to viewers no matter their attainment or experience level with this material ?
You always interest about stuff like that . Like , if you have new player at the table you care about how they are going to respond to how the rules work , or are they going to get it ? And certainly if you ’re doing this on a camera , you ideally want viewers who have never play these thing before and you worry , well how do they deal with the rules ? And really at the end of the day , I do n’t really worry about it so much . I just kind of figured if it was a full history people will get suck in . Because it ’s really , the way you get under one’s skin ta look at it , it ’s not so much about playing with rule , it ’s about tell a tarradiddle hand and glove with your friends . Now I happen to be the author , director and supporting cast of this but the protagonists , I ca n’t control . And so , there is a really fun irregular element in this story telling exercise . So basically , if you ’re just someone who ’s never encounter a role play game in your life – it is fun , it ’s like watching an improv troupe . It is fun to watch as these chapters play out . But you never fuck what these protagonists are cash in one’s chips to do ; they ’re all irregular because they are histrion in a game rather than pre - written characters . I ’m not one hombre who get to write all of it , they are all spell their own storey .
I reckon that was the most compelling element , I do n’t worry about the regulation so much as … I consider that the story that we tell apart was in reality really damned good . I would like to see an reanimate DC moving picture that just tells the chronicle . I cogitate that would be really nerveless . In fact , hold on for a sec , have me peddle this right now ! This would make – incisively how it was , include even some of the dialogue – this would make an incredible DC vivify film . And I ’m not enunciate that , you know , because I ’ll make it very clear . I ’m the abide cast , so I would n’t inevitably even work on this . But it ’s a smashing story ! It ’s profile ; it ’s the fact that it was always a great avocation . It ’s the great hobby in the world . I mean , it ’s – if you were to – look , I ’m a big video biz guy . I dead adore video games . I ’ve had some incredible stories told to me , you know , hell – I work in video games . I encounter Starkiller in the Force Unleashed , I play Deacon St. John in Days Gone . Like , I ’ve done a lot of picture secret plan workplace . And having said that , if I was sound to go to a desert island , and you ’re like , “ Hey man , you could fetch your RPG books or you could bring your play PC , ” I would go with the RPG al-Qur’an . It ’s just the coolest way to tell a story in the world . In terms of a secret plan , it ’s incredible . It ’s just endlessly originative , endlessly interesting and fun and it ’s a enceinte way to tie with your friend around a table .
