At the 1:42 mark in theStar state of war : The Rise of Skywalkertrailer , there ’s a setting that shows a Y - Wing flying toward a ship and blasting it . Interestingly , it bears a chance on resemblance to a picture picture in concept prowess for the first moving-picture show in the serial , Star war : A New Hope , from 1977 . The concept art comes from a house painting from Roger McQuarrie which was complete in 1975 , and is actually one of the earliest piece of concept art drawn up for the movie . In the painting , a Y - Wing is show in an inverted angle , fly in the guidance of theDeath Star .
Lucasfilm creative art manager Phil Szostak state in a tweet that the resemblance is " just a coincidence " , according to James Clyne , a design supervisor for ILM Visual Effects . Szostak adds that with a photographic camera behind a Y - Wing , nigh any vista can look like McQuarrie ’s painting , irrespective of whether or not that was the design . It was pointed out by a commenter on the Twitter Emily Price Post that the animated seriesStar state of war : The Clone Warsactually did pay homage to the painting , but , it ’s of grade potential that this too was simply a happenstance . Still , in a late consultation withVanity Fair , director J.J. Abrams said that he wanted to bring in to life some of McQuarrie ’s construct that had n’t made it into the original trilogy :
" McQuarrie , obviously , is as much the visual architect of Star Wars as anyone . And some of his work still had n’t been full realized . Some of his sketches had n’t been built , some of the set had n’t been made . So it was fun to get to take some of that inspiration , and run with it . "
This can intelligibly be seen in the similarity betweenPalpatine ’s throne in the trailerand sketches of the toilet made by McQuarrie forStar state of war : Return of the Jedi . His design of a throne with black , claw spikes did n’t make it into the original film , but patently it will make an visual aspect in the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga .
