Star Warshas at long last resolve one of its oldest plot of ground holes - revealing the Death Star did n’t travel to Yavin 4 alone . The Death Star was the pinnacle of Imperial achievement . It hadtaken over two decades to buildand had consumed vast quantities of resource from across the galaxy , but the Empire believed it to be their ultimate arm .
And yet , there ’s always been something rather unknown about the Death Star ’s attack on the Rebel bag on Yavin 4 . The Empire may be self-important , but their leader are n’t stupid ; they knew the Rebels would oppose for their survival . Any military strategian would have figured they should send in support units with the Death Star , Imperial Star Destroyers to supply cover fire . While the Empire did n’t conceive the Death Star could be taken down - they did n’t do it about Galen Erso ’s sabotage - they also would n’t require it damaged when it had just been completed . Viewers versed in military maneuver have long puzzled over just what the Emperor and his tactician were thinking .

This week’sStar Wars#3 by Charles Soule and Jesus Saiz has in the end answered the question ; it turns out the Death Star enter the Yavin scheme with a fleet of backup . The issue features a extended diatribe by a Tarkin loyalist named Commander Zahra , and she explains why her Imperial Star Destroyer - named the Tarkin ’s Will - is in a serious state of disrepair . It seems this was one of many Imperial Star Destroyers caught in the detonation of the Death Star , and was struck by a massive chunk of Death Star wreckage . Presumably , some of these ship were still operational , and one must have even picked up Darth Vader .
This may unsex oneDeath Star - sized plot of land hole , but unfortunately , it creates new ace . The most obvious problem is that there ’s no sign of an royal fleet go with the Death Star in the firstStar Warsfilm ; given the sheer sizing of the Death Star , it ’s fairish to assume they exited Hyperspace at the far side of the space post . The Empire had consistently underestimate the danger pose by snub paladin , so they would n’t bother to reposition them when they first detected the incoming Rebel attack . It ’s an awkward explanation , but it just about work .
The 2nd problem , however , is rather more unmanageable to explain . If the Empire still had a mien in the Yavin organisation , then the Rebel Alliance should really have give up their fundament as quickly as possible . alternatively , they took their meter and even held an honour ceremony for Han Solo and Luke Skywalker . According to tie - ins , they left the next morning . It ’s possible the Rebels believed the remaining regal forces were too severely damaged to press home the onrush , but they were favourable rather than wise ; ifDarth Vaderwas quick recovered , he ’d have no doubt lead an attack on the Death Star no matter what State Department his make it force-out were in .
