And not because her performance was n’t estimable , but because she had little to no dialogue , and most of her acting relied on facial expressions . Many viewers have verbalize their disappointment ( and , in some cases , anger ) over Paquin ’s “ underused ” gift inThe Irishman , while many others have praised her ability to save a “ haunt ” performance without saying much .
The Irishmanmarks Scorsese ’s return to rabble cinema after exploring other genres for over a decade . Anna Paquin Had No Dialogue Because Her Character Required It
Viewers first meet Peggy Sheeran as a child , and witness ( along with her ) how her father brutally beats the possessor of a foodstuff store who campaign her for knocking over a mathematical product . This was the offset of a very tense father - and - daughter kinship , as Peggy never trusts her father again and becomes afraid of him . Her distrust grows every time she sees her father impart for “ work ” , knowing that he is imply in dangerous businesses . Peggy does n’t trust Russell Bufalino either , but she builds a warm bond with Jimmy Hoffa , who she comes to love as a Father-God human body and more than her literal father . When Hoffa disappears , Peggy suspects Frank is behind it , and that prompts her to face her male parent – and those are the only words she says .
Paquin did n’t have more lines because her character was afraid of her Father-God , to the point of being scared of speak up , and did n’t actually have a relationship with him . She only shouts at him by the close of the film because she does care about Jimmy Hoffa , her only founding father figure . Of course , she could have had something to say in the ( brief ) scene she had with Hoffa , marking even more the contrast between her behaviour towards the two human being , but that was not the case . Even with no substantial dialogue , Paquin delivered a great performance inThe Irishmanthat brought stress to Frank ’s family unit lifetime , and testify that some family bonds , once break , ca n’t always be fix .
